My name is Dalien and I am a fashion industry rogue, that has worn various hats throughout the years, ranging from fashion research and education to manufacturing.
I firmly believe that knowledge is power. As a good understanding of a particular subject leads to improved decision-making, while building confidence. That being said, I further appreciate that fashion as a theme includes various elements, more than merely clothing ourselves or the mainstream fashion trends being promoted.
My practical approach aims to instruct on the different processes going into the making of a garment, and I would like to take you on a journey to relearn old techniques, master new methods, and challenge and expand yourself, as I am of the opinion that with the right attitude and approach anything is possible. Furthermore, I also believe that there are many ways to skin a cat - so let us investigate, experiment, and observe together. Although this is Sew Rogue in a thimble, my main mission is to inspire all people to be perfectly imperfect. Remember: all clothes are handmade.
I further reckon that collaboration is essential, as in the words of Ryunosuke Satoro: “Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.” Therefore, we strive to unite with like-minded individuals and communities to navigate our way through our projects.
I grew up in a home where both my mom and grandma sewed, and grandma was even a tailor at one point in her life! As a kid I also had a hot pink toy sewing machine, complete with a foot pedal and REAL sewing needles (that was the 80s for you!🙈). With which I sewed a variety of small items, such as potpourri filled wardrobe sachets. The first item, however, that I was super proud of was a 90s tartan foldover skirt in black and green that I made entirely by myself (with proper guidance of course) when I was about 11.
At some point though, I lost my zest for sewing. Maybe it just became really uncool as I became a teenager, because who wants to wear home-made clothes instead of a Billabong tee! Just to be sure I distance myself well and good from sewing, I even opted for hospitality studies, instead of home economics in high school.
But as I grew older and became less cool (just kidding, I have always been uncool😎), I started to sew once more. This time having to teach myself as I went along, by sewing up commercial patterns. Then, at some point the notion to again start formal studies interested me and I set out to find something that tied in with my hobby. In the end deciding on consumer science, with a major in fashion retail management. However, as I also had a full time job while studying, the time to actually sew stuff became less and later non-existent… As my studies and my interest in the subject matter progressed, I diverged into the world of fashion research and education and later even manufacturing. But now I have fully dived back into sewing and pattern making and would like to make a me made wardrobe, while sharing what I have learnt along the way.
Welcome to Sew Rogue! A space where I hope to inspire you to be perfectly imperfect.
